Stand up for a classmate who is being bullied or harassed by other students.
Make a meal and deliver it to someone who lives alone-(someone who is elderly or disabled). Or, you do not have to make a meal for them-just go visit them and spend a few minutes of your time with them.
Visit an assisted living center or a nursing home and spend some time with the people there. If you play a musical instrument or have a talent maybe you could share it with them. They would be so grateful for your time and would truly appreciate whatever you do. (Check with the program coordinator or administrator at the facility first before you go to arrange for your visit). Maybe your group or school class could go and spend some time with them-(entertain them or something).
Smile at everyone you meet and if you feel it would be appropriate and acceptable, greet them with a friendly hello. Create or purchase a card and send it to a soldier in Iraq or some other part of the world where our soldiers are stationed. If you could include a small item for them, (such as a non-perishable food item or a small toiletry item), I know they would enjoy that as well-however, just the card would be great if you could do that. They will appreciate anything you do for them.
Be a big brother or sister to a lonely child! Offer to take a child in the Big Brothers or Big Sisters program bowling or out for a bite to eat. You could offer to take them fishing or to a park to play for a while. A child in this program would just appreciate your time. A suggestion if you are going to do this, when you a done, give them a book or a CD with some encouraging thoughts, words, or music on it to enjoy. It would be a real encouragement to them for the future.
Read a book to your child or to another child or even to a group of children such as at your child’s school, if in kindergarten or elementary school. If you do not have a child in school you could volunteer to go and read a book to a class at school. The children will absolutely love it.
Develop a class project for your class at school! As a class project at school, make a big poster with each child in the class drawing something or writing something on it and send it to a group of soldiers from your town stationed in another part of the world such as Iraq. They will be so encouraged by what you have done to be sure.
Do something to encourage someone in your past that has helped you! Send a card or better yet call, or if you can, go visit someone from your past that has encouraged you and made a difference in your life-a teacher, a friend, a counselor-someone who has done something special in your life. It will blow them away and they will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Thank a policeman or woman or fireman or woman in uniform when you see them. Now that would sure be different wouldn’t it? Oh and when the officer or fireman falls down from fainting you be sure to help them back to their feet and thank them. Yes, I said thank them! Do you have any idea what these men and women go through each and every day for us to protect us and keep us safe? Many of these men and women risk their lives every day for OUR safety and protection. I doubt most of us really grasp that and understand that. I know I don’t. Call the local police station or fire station or send them a card even. Make them cookies, have pizza delivered to them-do it anonymously if you want-but do something special and different for those who do such a great job at serving us or protecting us every day! You will make someone’s day to be sure. (One more thing, you might think-well some of them or a lot of them are corrupt or are prejudiced or bad. It is sad to say, but yes, some of them are. But not all officers are and most of them are not! Please keep that in mind before you judge them too harshly). They are still out there every day on the front lines protecting you and me.
Thank a soldier in uniform for his or her sacrifice for us and for their country. Offer them a smile and an encouraging word to inspire and motivate them as they continue their service to our country.
Members of the press print, publish, or produce something with a positive message! Members of the media -feature positive news at the top of your broadcast, your newspaper headline, or as the cover article for your March issue of the magazine. Come on. Go ahead-just for that day do it. Please? If you have already planned your magazine copy for March, 2009
couldn’t you somehow change it to participate in this wonderful day and experience so we can all enjoy a more positive and inspiring day? It won’t hurt and will sure help all of us be more positive as we go out into our world to face the day. And, for those of you in broadcast media-close out your last news program of the day with something positive so that way we all start the day and end the day with positive news. To those of you, who will do this, thank you in advance!Donate things from your home you no longer use or need to someone in need! Go through your drawers and closets and clean out the good clothes, blankets, sheets or other items you do not wear or use anymore and donate them to a local homeless shelter. Include a note or a couple of notes written, To Whom It May Concern, offering a kind and positive word to encourage someone who receives it. You do not have to give your name or address or anything. Just sign it a concerned and interested person.
